GST or the Goods and Services Tax, is an indirect destination tax that is levied on goods and services when they are being sold. For the collection of tax, goods and services are divided into five tax slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.
The individual state government levies separate tax on alcoholic goods and petroleum products. While precious stones are taxed at a special rate of 0.25%, gold is taxed at 3%. From 1st July, 2017, the tax came into being via the implementation of the One Hundred and First Amendment of the Constitution of India.
Earlier, cascading taxes were being applied by both the Central as well as the state governments which later got replaced by one direct tax. Goods and Services Tax Council governs the rates of taxes and the rules and regulations. It comprises The Union Minister of State, in-charge of Revenue of finance and The Minister In-charge of finance or taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government of finance ministers from the centre and from different states.
Since GST is a destination based tax, therefore taxation depends upon the consumption and target of the goods and services, rather than their source location. That is why; the exports are not liable to taxation and hence are zero-rated in the territories. The imports are taxed because the region is the final destination of the product.
